Chapter 21
Standing side by side, we studied the small opening at the back of the cave. There was a faint glow coming from within that spilled out across the dark stone ground right in front of it. Apart from that, the only source of illumination inside the cave came from the midday sun outside the wider entrance. I flicked another glance around the rather large space. It had taken about half an hour to hike up here. And as far as I could tell, neither humans nor animals seemed to have been inside this cave in decades.
âSoâ¦â Paige began, drawing out the word. âHow many of the people on the terrace below do you think knew that this was here?â
âNone,â Callan replied. âThe people who lived here when the dark mages from Eldar hid the Enhancer down there are long dead now.â
âSo youâre sure that itâs still there?â
âI think we wouldâve heard about it otherwise.â
âAnd youâre sure about going down there just the two of you?â She shifted her gaze to me, and worry crept into her eyes. âDidnât you say that itâs going to be really dangerous?â
I gave her a reassuring smile. âWeâre sure. And yes, it will be. But having to worry about Lance screwing us over while we try to dodge the traps will be even more dangerous.â
âGood point.â She jabbed an elbow into Henryâs side, which made him blink down at her in surprise. âWell, Henry and I will take care of Lance. You just worry about the traps.â Narrowing her eyes, she looked between me and Callan. âBut you know what they are, right? The traps, I mean. The dudes who hid it down there left some kind of instructions or map or something, right?â
âUhmâ¦â I exchanged a glance with Callan.
âRight?â she pressed.
âNot really, no,â I admitted with a shrug. âThey didnât want people to be tempted into going after it unless it was absolutely necessary.â
Paige gave me a flat look. âSo youâre going in blind.â
It wasnât really a question, but I answered anyway. âYeah.â
âShit, Audrey.â Closing her eyes, she pinched the bridge of her nose and blew out a long sigh before meeting my gaze again. âSo when should we start getting worried?â
Callan and I exchanged another look. âThree days.â
âThree days?â
I threw my hands up in a helpless gesture. âWe donât know whatâs in there or how far down it goes. Weâre just guessing at this point. It might take more than three days.â
âAnd if it does,â Callan picked up, âdonât come in after us. Your job right now is to keep Lance in check, got it?â
Henry nodded. âGot it.â
Instead of answering, Paige looked between Callan and me a couple of times. Raising a hand, she pointed towards him while locking eyes with me. âIs this why youâve become so bossy too? Because being bossy is a requirement for being a dark mage, or something?â
I chuckled. âYou know what? I think you might actually be onto something there.â
âThatâs what happens when you spend your
